I continue to be very impressed with KTLN - not only for its content, but also they way it is very informative but shows discretion in the way it reports, but is very clear in its content. Well done and thank you.

Kalkan lover Barry Northrop dies aged 72 PDF Print E-mail

Barry NorthropIt is with immense sadness that we report the death of a regular visitor to Kalkan, Barry Northrop.

Barry was diagnosed with prostate cancer back in 2016 and had been receiving treatment for his condition.  Sadly his brave battle ended last week when he passed away, peacefully in the presence of his family.  He was 72 years old.

Barry and his wife Sue have been Kalkan fans for many years and own a property here.  They recently celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary back in the UK.

Both popular members of the expat community in Kalkan, Barry and Sue loved spending time out here.  Barry was particularly fond of the mountain walking opportunities in this part of the world and got his boots on whenever he could.  It’s probably true to say that Barry knew more local walking paths than any other foreigner in Kalkan; there can’t be many routes he was not familiar with.

Back in the UK Barry was passionate about sailing.  For three years he was Commodore of his local sailing club in Birchington on Sea, the Minnis Bay Sailing Club.  He taught both of his sons to sail and spent many happy days messing around on the water.  Barry also loved to travel.  In 1998 he and Sue went trekking in the foothills of the Himalayas.

In his early life Barry did an apprenticeship as a toolmaker but in a recession was made redundant.  For a while he drove an ambulance for Age Concern before starting his own successful gardening business.

Barry was a warm and kind person who made so many friends in Kalkan over the years.  He will undoubtedly be remembered with great affection by those who were fortunate enough to know him.

We send our condolences to his wife Sue, his sons Simon and Oliver, his wider family and friends.

Please note that Barry's funeral will take place on Friday 1st September at 14.30 at Thanet Crematorium, Manston Road, Margate, CT9 4LY.

May he rest in peace.  Allah rahmet eylesin.
