CAA launches unprecedented repatriation effort after Monarch collapse PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 02 October 2017

MonarchBad news from the travel industry.  After a long period of speculation it has been announced that the UK's fifth largest airline group Monarch has ceased trading and entered administration.

The Monarch web site is no longer available and confirmation of the failure of the business has been published on the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) web site.  As of today 2 October 2017 all future holidays and flights provided by Monarch have been cancelled and are no longer operating.

The scale of this failure is unprecedented and because there are as many as 110,000 passengers abroad, the UK government has asked the CAA to co-ordinate flights back to the UK for all Monarch customers currently overseas. These new flights will be at no extra cost to Monarch customers.

Monarch was founded in 1986 and has been an important carrier for people wishing to visit Turkey, and many other European destinations.  Last year it flew 6.5 million passengers, either as flight only deals or as part of a package holiday.  Monarch employs around 2,750 employees, mostly based in the UK.

The CAA web site contains full details of what happens now for all Monarch customers.  Click here to go to the relevant CAA pages.

The Monarch companies affected are:

  • Monarch Airlines Ltd
  • Monarch Holidays Ltd (ATOL Number 2275)
  • First Aviation Ltd (ATOL Number 4888) previously trading as Monarch Airlines
  • Avro Ltd (ATOL Number 1939)
  • Somewhere2stay Ltd

Customers already abroad
If you are currently abroad and due to return to the UK on or before 15th October 2017 the CAA is making arrangements for you to return home to the UK on a new flight, at the end of your holiday. These new flights will be at no extra cost to you.

Vulnerable passengers will be given priority, including unaccompanied minors, and the CAA will make sure that family groups travel on the same flights.  For further advice and details of your new flight please read: I am currently abroad.

If you are currently abroad and due to return to the UK after this date, please click on this link: Additional information from CAA.

Customers yet to travel from the UK
Unfortunately all future holidays and flights booked with Monarch are now cancelled as of 2nd October 2017.  If you are booked on a Monarch Airlines flight, please do not go to your UK airport, as your flight will not be operating.  Further information is available here: I have a future booking and have not travelled yet.

UK Department of Transport
The following link to the UK Department of Transport web site provides additional useful information: Department of Transport.  We advise any KTLN readers caught up in this to take a look at the advice on this government web site.

Impact on tourism
This is a massive blow for travellers to Turkey, those who work in the tourism industry, and of course it is devastating for the Monarch employees themselves.  Around 110,000 travellers need to be repatriated back to the UK from various overseas destinations including Turkey and 300,000 bookings are cancelled.

When any travel company or flight operator fails, the immediate logistical challenges are bad enough but the scale and impact of this collapse is unprecedented.  And looking to the future it means less choice for customers - fewer flight options and probably higher ticket prices.

A very sad day indeed.  Our thoughts today are with Monarch customers and staff.
