New Year in Kalkan 2009/10New Year's Eve in Kalkan was something special.  Not only did we see the new year in under a blue moon, (that's where you get two full moons in the same calendar month), but the atmosphere down by the harbour was brilliant.

There must have been parties all over Kalkan, but from our experience, the harbour is where most people tend to gather to see in the new year.  Trio and Aubergine restaurants were especially busy.

We have captured some of the scenes down by the harbour, around midnight, but to be honest, our photos, (18 of them), can't convey how good it was.

Every year, the restaurants by the harbour try to up their game, and this New Year's Eve was no exception.  We had some big sound systems, pumping out the music, which must have echoed across the mountains to outlying villages.

Many people were in the mood to dance.  There was music for all tastes, including Turkish songs - traditional and modern, and classic dance music from the UK & USA.  There was even a clever version of Auld Lang Syne, which included the theme from the Channel 4 programme Countdown, and the chimes of Big Ben.

The fireworks were better than ever this year, and very well organised.  We didn't see any wayward rockets this time - they all appeared to go upward, as intended.

The crowd was a mixture of Turkish and non-Turkish revellers.  Everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves, in what was a friendly and happy atmosphere.  The drink was certainly flowing, but there were no signs of drunken behaviour, nor was there any trouble.  For many, it was an evening packed with embraces, hand-shakes and kisses.

The only time we saw the Jandarma was earlier in the evening, when they were conducting roadside checks, coming into town.

Wherever you were, we hope your night was just as enjoyable.  If you have not tried Kalkan over the Christmas and New Year holiday period, we would highly recommend it.
