Calling all gardeners - community gardening events in March PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 27 March 2018

Bougainvillea at KTLN HQArticle updated 27th March: If you’re a gifted gardener who’s passionate about plants or just a have-a-go horticulturalist we would like to let you know about a couple of events coming up that could be right up your sokak.

Kalkan Platform is a group which brings together a number of local associations to work together on various community projects.

Currently they are involved in a couple of projects connected to nature and the environment and they are looking for volunteers to lend a hand.  One project involves planting trees and the other aims to bring some colour to the harbour breakwater by planting bougainvillea bushes.

At this stage the dates are not confirmed however both events are likely to take place mid to late March.

Update 27th March: Here are the dates and times.

  • Tree planting in Ova - Saturday 31st March.  Meet at the Kalkan bus station at 09.00.  Transport required - if you have a car it would be appreciated if you could make it available.
  • Harbour breakwater planting - Sunday 1st April.  Meet at the harbour at 10.00.

The trees and bougainvillea plants are being provided, so all you need to do is come along in your gardening gear and bring along a spade (and any other equipment you fancy).  The idea is that we will work for a few hours and finish with a BBQ.

The tree planting event is part of Forestry Week (Orman Haftası) - something that takes place every March in Turkey.  The Kalkan harbour event is a local initiative designed to bring some much needed colour to the breakwater between the red lighthouse and Indigo Beach Club.

The harbour is a focal point in Kalkan and is visible from many parts of town.  The Belediye has done a great job in some parts of town, such as the D400 junction, planting lots of colourful flowers and shrubs but some people feel that a little more colour is required at the harbour.  Let's show what our community can do.  Please come along and lend a hand if you can.
