Patara beach clean up 2018

Article updated 20th April 2018 with photos from the day.  SEE BELOW.

Patara beach is a magnificent place just a short drive away from Kalkan.  Its golden sands and dunes stretch for miles, in the direction of Ölüdeniz.

It is a place of outstanding natural beauty, and is a specially protected area in Turkish law, where sea turtles return year after year to lay their eggs.

But this delightful spot on the Turquoise coast can sometimes be blighted by litter and rubbish.  Some of this is deposited when we have stormy weather in the winter.  Sometimes it is inconsiderate people.

Every year before the season really starts volunteers go along and have a bit of a clean up, and that is exactly what is planned for Tuesday 17th April.  This year it's taking place as part of Tourism Week.  Everyone is invited to come along and help.

Members of the Kalkan Walking Group will be there and we are expecting a number of schoolchildren too if you would like to join us and lend a hand with the litter picking.  It is always a fun day - well more like half a day really.

We will set off from Kalkan bus station at 10.00 with the aim of starting work on Patara beach a short time later.  We normally car share so we need people with cars please to help us get to the beach.

Please bring your own water - it can be thirsty work, and also perhaps bring a light snack.  It's also a good idea to bring some gloves.  Bin bags will be provided. It will probably be sunny, so please make sure you have a hat and sun cream.

We normally find somewhere local to have a post clean up debrief, with tea, coffee or perhaps a beer.

If you would like to join in and make a difference do please come along on the day.  You can just turn up but it would be useful for logistics and planning if you can tell us if you aim to be there, and if you have a car available: Contact KTLN

It's an opportunity to help the environment, possibly meet some new friends, and you can be back in Kalkan in time for an afternoon siesta.  Why not give it a go!

Article updated 20th April 2018: Below:  Some photos from Tuesday 17th April 2018.  In total thirty bags of rubbish were collected.

The first image shows rubbish collected at the dunes.  Thanks to all who took part.  It was an enjoyable morning.
