Turkish populationUpdate: Now includes latest population figure for Kalkan.

The Turkish Statistical Institute has just published population figures as at 31st December 2009.  Here are some of the interesting facts to emerge.

At the end of 2009, the total population of Turkey was 72, 561,312.

We are not completely sure, but we assume that this figure will include all those foreigners with residency (an ikamet), but not those here on a 3 month visa.

The latest estimate we have for the UK is 62 million - not quite as precise as Turkey.

There are more men than women in Turkey - 50.3% & 49.7% respectively.

Three quarters of people live in large cities, whilst one quarter live smaller towns and villages.

The largest cities are: Istanbul - 12.9 million (17.8%); Ankara - 4.7 million (6.4%); Izmir - 3.9 million (5.3%); Bursa - 2.6 million (3.5%) & Adana - 2.1 million (2.8%).

The median age of the population is just under 29.  Turkey is a young country.

The number of people per square kilometre has increased slightly over recent years, and is now 94 per sq. km.  In the UK it's 257 people per sq. km.

Locally, the figures show that as at 31st December 2009, Kalkan had 3,092 residents - an increase of almost 5%.  In 2008 the population was 2,959, and in 2007 it was 2,259.
