Car crash in KalkanThere was a serious road traffic accident earlier today, at the main junction near to the petrol station.

At just after mid-day, a lorry travelling on the D400 highway, from the Fethiye direction, crashed into a car that was crossing the traffic lights from the Akbel side of the road, heading towards Kalkan town.

Hasan Ay, from the Kördere area of Kalkan, was driving his black Renault car across the dual carriageway, when the lorry, laden with vegetables, slammed into the right hand side of his vehicle, at speed.

Below: The route of the car in red, and the lorry in blue.

The lorry driver appeared to be unhurt, despite his vehicle ending up on its side.  However Hasan Ay was taken to hospital.  The initial indications are that his injuries are not serious.

The Jandarma were promptly on the scene, to manage the traffic until the vehicles could be removed.

No doubt there will be an inquiry to establish who had right of way. But whatever the outcome, today's accident highlights how dangerous this junction can be.

We cannot comment on this specific incident, however, on other occasions we have observed traffic coming down the hill towards the traffic lights at great speed.

We have also observed traffic driving the wrong way down towards the petrol station.  Great care needs to be taken when negotiating this junction.
