Share Many of you who completed the KTLN Kalkan survey had a go at our free, fun competition to win a bottle of Turkish wine.
Using no more than 30 words, you were asked to complete the sentence, "I love Kalkan because...".
We had no idea how hard it would be to come up with 5 winners. Your words were elequent, touching and sometimes funny - not to mention cheeky!
Words that appeared frequently were "paradise", "heaven" and "friendly". The word "Efes" didn't appear once! Some of you were so carried away extolling the virtues of Kalkan that you forgot about the 30 word maximum. Oops! Anyway, we have chosen 5 winners, which we share with you here. But we got so many lovely entries that we will think of a way of sharing them with you at some point. Leave that one with us.
1. Deborah Holland: I love Kalkan because... I smile when I arrive; laugh while I'm there and cry when I leave.
[That sums it up for many of us Deborah]
2. Wendy Dewar: I love Kalkan because... A bottle of şarap, A takeaway kebap, No shoes And those views..... Job done!
[A nice bit of rhyming there, and you have indeed won a bottle of şarap. You have to supply your own kebap Wendy - sorry].
3. Valerie Busher: I love Kalkan because... it delivers your dreams all wrapped up in sunshine and smiles.
[Simple, but effective]
4. Eve Lowen: I love Kalkan because... the welcome of local people is warm as the sun, their hospitality refreshing like the sparkling sea with cuisine like a gift from the gods!
[Pure poetry]
5. Barry Cashin: I love Kalkan because... it captures the magic of paradise, the spirit of Turkey and the mystic qualities of a beautiful nation, it’s people, life and culture. Kalkan - one of life’s best hidden secrets.
[Wow! How do we keep it a secret though?]
That's five winners, however, we have decided to add an extra one. The following entry comes from one of the few Turkish people who completed the survey, Osman Tok. He is also, incidentally, the language teacher who kindly agreed to translate your comments into Turkish, so that we can share them with the Belediye.
However, Osman's assistance with translation has nothing to do with the reason we chose his entry. Read it for yourself, and make your own mind up.
6. Osman Tok: I love Kalkan because... I feel as if I'm living in a beautiful common garden, filled with coloured flowers in bloom and singing birds, in love - nobody cares what's going to happen next.
[How elequent is that! And it's not even Osman's first language]
So these are our 6 winners, but we thought you may like to see a few more that made us smile. No prizes for the following entries I'm afraid, but thank you for sharing these thoughts with us:
I love Kalkan because... I live in Wolverhampton.
[We know where you're coming from - both literally and metaphorically. Only joking...]
I love Kalkan because... I don't have to put up with the miserable gits I leave at home.
[How much is it worth to keep your name secret?]
I love Kalkan because... I know more people to greet every day, and have more good friends there, than I have after 60 years living in London surrounded by 7 million others.
[We can certainly relate to that]
And finally a brief, but perfectly brilliant one liner, which sums up what the majority of you were saying:
I love Kalkan because... it reminds me how good life can be. [Editor: Analysis of the survey data is currently being prepared, and will be published soon] Share |
