As an owner of a property in Kalkan, this site seemed an excellent way of keeping in touch, especially as for much of the year I am not able to be out there.

Plans to restore the old school in Kalkan town PDF Print E-mail

Old First SchoolIn 1937 local businessman, Mustafa Kocakaya, built the original Kalkan First School.

Many of you will have passed this building.  It is located on the main roundabout in town, close to the car park.  See photo below.

It has not been used as a school for some time, and is currently empty, and in need of renovation.

This is an important building in the recent history of Kalkan, and there has been talk of restoring it to its former glory.  But of course, something like that would require a significant amount of money.

Fortunately, Kalkan is a member of the Union of Historic Towns (Tarihi Kentler Birliği - TKB), an organisation that is recognised internationally as doing excellent work to preserve and restore historical sites in Turkey.

The TKB has a website, but only certain parts are in English.  To quote from it, the TKB "aims to obtain solidarity and collaboration among the municipalities in protection of the natural, cultural and historical heritage of the cities".

The good news is that the TKB has agreed to pay a sum of money to enable restoration plans for the old school to be drawn up.  These plans will be the first step in establishing a restoration project for this important old building.

Assuming further funding can be obtained to carry out the restoration, the plan is that the building would become a cultural and historical focus for Kalkan.  Any work would ensure that the original character of the building would be faithfully maintained - internally and externally.

Clearly, there is a long way to go before anyone will see any tangible results, but the longest journey has to start with the first step, and this is now about to happen.

Kalkan Turkish Local News will update you on progress, when we receive any new information.
