Kalkan Election Results March 2009 PDF Print E-mail

On Sunday 29th March the Turkish residents of Kalkan voted in elections for a new Mayor.  The unconfirmed result is that the successful candidate is Saim Karakurt of the CHP party.  The provisional results are as follows:

- Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi, CHP - 41%
- Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, AKP - 40%
- Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi, MHP  18%

However the winning margin was extremely narrow and the result has been challenged, so we may not know the final outcome for a few more days.

Campaigning
In the build up to the election all candidates put in a lot of effort to get their messages across, including lots of hand-shaking, handing out leaflets, putting up posters and of course their vehicles emblazoned with larger than life photos of the candidates and their teams, blasting out stirring Turkish music.

The election contest culminated in communal barbecues near campaign headquarters on Thursday evening, complete with searchlight type lasers pointing skywards, and then finally on Saturday when the roads in town virtually ground to a halt with the massed gatherings.

It was reminiscent of the scenes last seen when Turkey played so well in the World Cup in 2008, with lots of flag waving, and cars driving round tooting their horns.  A number of massive sound systems appeared from nowhere, with speakers stacked over 6 feet tall in places, booming out the party slogans and theme tunes.  We even had the spectacle of a paraglider descending over the town throwing out what appeared to be confetti - maybe they were leaflets, who knows?  All very good natured to the casual observer.

Sunday was a much quieter day as voters considered their decisions and made their way to the green school to cast their vote.  The roads leading to the school, (which incidentally have recently been laid with bricks, presumably with the traffic of the election in mind), were busy all day.  As daylight faded crowds started to gather around the school, with small groups deep in conversation.  It was said to be close, but still no final result.

The Result
Shortly after 7pm the announcement came.  Cue the motor cavalcade, and more horns, sirens, cheering and flag waving.  Shortly after 8pm the successful candidate returned to his headquarters at the Ilban restaurant on Şehitler Cad. and addressed a crowd of between 400 and 500 people from the stairs going up to the rooftop terrace.

The contrast between winners and losers was stark.  The headquarters of the unsuccessful candidates were all but deserted.  In contrast, the CHP base was buzzing.  Most people were on the street, with perhaps 50 or so inside.  People were smiling, there was laughter and tears of joy, and lots of embracing.  The kitchen was in overdrive producing çay for the crowd.  The TV in the corner was reporting on results from around the country.  Tonight was a time to celebrate success.  Soon the business of running this small coastal town will begin.  Or will it?

The outgoing party, the AKP dispute the result and have lodged a challenge.  We are going to have to wait another day or so for a final adjudication.  After all the celebrations of Sunday night there is now a real hiatus, a sense of disbelief and a palpable tension in town as people speculate on the possible outcomes.

We won't speculate here, but when the final result is in you we will let you know.

Footnote:  For information, here is how some other local results look.  Yeşilköy - AKP; Kınık - AKP; Kaş - CHP and Fethiye - MHP.
