23rd April 2010Here is the Kalkan Turkish Local News report on Children's Day (Çocuk Bayram) 2010.

The day started with a brief ceremony at Atatürk's statue, then it was time for the schoolchildren to entertain everybody.

For the first time, the celebrations were held on the spot where the Thursday market is, and this proved to be an excellent venue.

The weather was perfect, if perhaps a little too warm for some.  It was certainly a day to seek out shade.

Just before 9am the school band marched down to the Atatürk statue, next to Doy Doy restaurant, and at 9am precisely, local VIPs and businesspeople paid their respects to the founder of modern Turkey.

Then the focus of activity moved up to the top of town, where gradually, over the morning, a crowd of well over 1,000 people turned up to cheer on the children, as they entertained us.

Full marks to the organisers - mostly teaching staff, and Belediye workers.  Everything appeared to go smoothly - the speeches, the songs, the dancing, musical performances, gymnastic displays, and even a judo demonstration.  Did you know that in Kalkan there are weekly judo classes?

And once again, it was a privilege for many of us, as foreigners, to share in this special day for our Turkish friends and neighbours.

Here are just a few images from a brilliant day.
