Mustafa Kocakaya CaddesiKalkan Turkish Local News brings you news about the pedestrianisation of Kalkan town centre for the summer.

From the start of next week, traffic will be prevented from going into the centre of town, in the evenings, with the introduction of the usual metal barriers.

These barriers will be put in place at 7pm daily, making the town centre safer and quieter for pedestrians.

There are three main access points to the old town centre. The first is down the hill to the Pirat Hotel, (Iskele Sokak), and along the harbour. A barrier will be placed next to the Marina restaurant.

The second is just by the main roundabout, where the one way (tek yön) sign is - see photo from last year, below.  During the summer, there will be hinged barriers in place which mean you can only come out of town this way.

The third set of barriers will be down Kışla Caddesi, close to the Whitehouse Hotel.

The ban on traffic in the town centre also applies to scooters, however you may find some riders weaving their way around the barriers, so please watch out for them.

Locals do have keys to open the barriers, but they may only do so in the event of an emergency.

In addition to these evening restrictions, all delivery vans and lorries must complete their deliveries by 10am. If they risk a delivery after that time, the local Zabita may issue a fine.

On a related point, the Belediye has decided to improve pedestrian safety at the junction near Moonlight Bar, where you turn down towards the Mosque, (Mustafa Kocakaya Caddesi).

They are joining the footpath that runs along the road opposite the post office (PTT), with the steps that go down the hill.  Currently, pedestrians have to walk on the road around this corner.

Below: Widening of the road to include a footpath for pedestrians.
