I continue to be very impressed with KTLN - not only for its content, but also they way it is very informative but shows discretion in the way it reports, but is very clear in its content. Well done and thank you.

Turkcell Super League decided in controversial circumstances PDF Print E-mail

Turkcell Super League

There were violent scenes in Istanbul last night, on the final day of the Turkish football Turkcell Super League.

Two teams were in contention - Fenerbahçe and Bursaspor, as the last games of the season were played last night.

Bursaspor emerged as champions, but in controversial circumstances.

In the run up to the last day of the season, Fenerbahçe were one point ahead of Bursaspor, so the title hinged on the very last game.

As it turned out, Fenerbahçe could only draw with Trabzonspor, whilst Bursaspor managed a 2-1 win over Beşiktaş.

But the winning goal for Bursaspor, was in fact an own goal by Beşiktaş, who are arch rivals of fellow Istanbul team Fenerbahçe.  If Beşiktaş had not put the ball in their own net, Fenerbahçe would have been champions.  So conspiracy theories are now circulating on the internet.

Also, with a few minutes still to play, a public announcement was made over the tannoy at the Fenerbahçe stadium, incorrectly telling everyone that the latest score from the Bursaspor match was 2 - 2.  If that had been true, then if Fenerbahçe held on to their 1 - 1 draw, they would be champions.

There were some premature celebrations by the Fenerbahçe crowd, and it even appeared as though the team stopped attacking - being content with a draw.  At the end of the game some Fenerbahçe fans still believed they were champions, but their joy turned to anger when they discovered that Bursaspor had in fact won, and not drawn.

There were violent scenes in the Fenerbahçe stadium after the game, as fires were lit in the stands.  Problems also spilled out on to the streets of Istanbul, where police had to contain the angry supporters.

Meanwhile, in Kalkan, at around 10pm, every non-Fenerbahçe fan was out on the streets, celebrating the fact that Fenerbahçe were not champions.  In a bizarre celebration of defeat, cars and bikes formed a procession round town, with much sounding of horns, and flag waving.

The final positions are:
  1. Bursaspor 75 points
  2. Fenerbahçe 74 points
  3. Galatasaray 64 points
  4. Beşiktaş 64 points
