Share Here is KTLN's report on the monthly Kalkan Belediye Board meeting. As is often the case, the questions and answers at the end of the formal business, were probably more interesting than the agenda items. The Board voted to take on some additional contract workers, on a part-time basis - solicitors, engineers and architects. The Board deferred a planning application, in a part of town not currently within the main town plan. The application will be dealt with once the Belediye has completed the 1:25,000 town plan. (See our earlier local news article from October 2009, for information on this new plan). In connection with the development of the D400 highway, and the new local service roads, that are to run alongside it, the Belediye is having to deal with local landowners, who claim they have been affected by these road works. As we understand it, some property owners have lost some of their land, and the subject of compensation has arisen. The Board voted to defer making decisions on these claims, until such time as the road works have been completed, so that the full extent of any impact can be properly assessed. The final item on the agenda was in relation to the technical terms of a loan, which was sought by the previous administration, to help pay for local roadworks. It transpires that in the original application, it was a condition that the local roads would be built only of bricks. However, on some roads, the Belediye wishes to use alternative materials - for example concrete. An example here would be the hill down to the Pirat Hotel, where bricks were washed away by flash flooding, and a more durable concrete surface was required. The Board voted to complete the required documents, varying the terms and conditions of this loan, which will enable them to once again use this loan money. With the formal part of the meeting over, questions were taken from members of the public. A local architect, involved in the development of the new school amphitheatre, mentioned that there is to be a show put on there, later this month, on Thursday 24th June. When we have details we will put something in our What's On Calendar. Barriers are now in place, preventing vehicles from accessing the old town centre in the evenings. A complaint was made about cars parking in front of these barriers. This would cause problems for any emergency service vehicles who needed to get through the barriers. On a similar theme, complaints were raised about local businesses encroaching on to roads, by placing plant pots, notice boards, and goods for sale, on the highway. Businesses may believe that a lack of action by the Zabita (Belediye officers), provides some kind of legitimacy for this, but the advice we have is that they have no legal right to obstruct the roads. It was also claimed that some delivery lorries are driving around the old town after 10am, in contravention of the local rules. It was argued that a firmer line was needed from the Belediye, to tackle all these issues. A letter from a Turkish resident was read out. The writer said how much the local economy depends upon tourism, and that construction noise during the main tourist season will have a bad effect on tourism, and hence local businesses. And on the subject of noise, it was explained why there is still some noise coming from the D400 road, despite a deadline in mid-May to stop all excavation. The works were recently inspected, and the inspector discovered a ridge of rock, where there shouldn't have been one. This has to be dug out. KTLN was also separately advised that prior to the asphalt surface being laid, a channel had to be dug for pipes and cables. This requires digging for just a few hours a day. There are also some local road works going on, such as the new road linking Kalamar Road to the hill down to the harbour, and also in Kızıltaş. A member of public at the meeting raised the subject of rain water drainage where the new, wider D400 road will be. Concern was expressed about whether the drainage was sufficient. Apparently, some people are worried that excess surface water may not be adequately directed away from properties in the area. The Mayor picked up his mobile phone, and asked someone (not sure who), to look into this. The Board mentioned that it is hoped to build a new ambulance station, somewhere between Ova and Kınık, which would be manned by a trained paramedic. No time scale was offered for this development. KTLN readers may recall that a new hospital is being built in Gökseki, between Kaş and Kalkan. This should be open in under 2 years from now. Good news for Kalkan residents and visitors alike. Continuing on the future theme, mention was made that the Jandarma station may be moving - but not in the near future. We understand that there is a large plot of land earmarked close to the traffic light junction, with enough room for a heli-pad. But for now, the Jandarma station is having quite a bit of work done, and is staying where it is. Share |
