Foreigners now need residency to buy or sell a vehicle PDF Print E-mail

Car ownershipOn 1st May 2010, a new law came into force in Turkey, in relation to vehicle ownership.

This law affects foreigners in Turkey, who wish to buy or sell a vehicle (car or scooter).  From now on it is necessary to have residency (also known as your ikamet) - a three month visa will no longer suffice.

With an ikamet number, you can also find your kimlik - a type of government ID number.  You will also need one of these, if you wish to own a vehicle.

You can get your kimlik number quite easily, at the following website:

http://tckimlik.nvi.gov.tr/Web/ForeignQueryIdentityNumber.aspx

It takes about a minute.  Where it says Resim Doğrulama: simply type in the code you see to the right.

Kimlik website

Where it says Doğum Yılı: type in your year of birth.  And where it says İkamet Tezkere No: type in your ikamet number, as shown on your booklet.

Details of how to obtain residency are given in the KTLN Knowledge Bank.

If you bought a vehicle before this law was introduced, and wish to sell it, you may want to get some legal advice on how to proceed.  But our understanding is that you will require residency to sell it on.

As far as we know, you don't need residency for one of these - see photo below.
