Travel alertTravel Alert: The future of Cyprus Turkish Airlines, or KTHY, (Kıbırıs Türk Hava Yolları), is in doubt following an order on Monday night from Turkey’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation, to suspend all KTHY flights, until further notice.

It would appear as though KTHY, the national airline of Northern Cyprus, may be on the verge of bankruptcy, with huge debts. It has reported losses in recent years.

The Hava-Sen union representing workers at KTHY went on strike on Tuesday, and this temporarily impacted on other local airlines.

Rival operators Atlas Jet and Pegasus may bid to take over the company, but the way forward currently hangs in the balance.

The company's website has a message in Turkish and English saying that they are working to find a solution to these problems.  They also say that they are trying to rearrange flights with other operators.

Their message continues, "We recommend to our passengers, agents and other organisations to follow the latest information on our website (www.kthy.net),  through our call center (0216 444 5849) and the local press".
