The report is based on incident figures reported by British visitors and residents to FCO offices around the world between April 2009 and March 2010.

A lack of travel insurance and inadequate preparation are said to have compounded problems faced by Britons abroad.

The report includes some excellent advice, including some that is specific to Turkey.

The number of times that FCO consular assistance was sought is quite staggering - nearly 20,000 cases worldwide in one year, of which more than one quarter (5,283) were in Spain.  The number in Turkey was 423.
