The most powerful thing about the site is the combination of such useful, informative and educative information about Kalkan (and Turkey) in one web site. Kalkan News is the first thing I read on KTLN.

It was a wonderful read, and hugely popular. It has even been translated into German. Well, Tricia has written another book called 'Megiste - A Visitor's Guide'. Here is a quick review by KTLN. The first thing to mention is that it should be seen as a guide rather than a book. The Road to Ruins was 170 pages long, whereas this is just 71 pages. It is still, nevertheless a valuable source of information if you are travelling to the island. The book tells the story of Megiste (or Meis or Kastellorizo), from as far back in history as anyone knows, right up to the 21st century. There are some fascinating facts in there. For example, the bravery of the people of Megiste during the First World War, was recognised by the Treaty of Sevres, when the island was awarded the French Croix de Guerre for heroism. One thing that comes across in this book is just how important this little island has been over the years - as a trading port and also in terms of its strategic location from a military perspective. So much so in fact, that it has been the scene of many battles, as different groups or rulers have sought to take control. The author draws on her expertise as an anthropologist to bring an insight into the lives of the island's residents, over the centuries. Whilst most of the guide is focussed on history, there is a section at the beginning that provides helpful tips for today's visitors. The book also contains some good photographs - many of them in colour. If you are thinking of heading over to Megiste (Meis), this guide will add to the enjoyment of your visit. Megiste - A Visitor's Guide is by Tricia Emptage. Cost 15TL. ISBN 978-975-01963-8-6 The book is available in Desti's Gift shop in Kalkan. You can also get your copy by contacting the author via KTLN.
