Kalkan is getting a new ambulance PDF Print E-mail

Within the next week or two Kalkan is to get a brand new Mercedes ambulance, fully kitted out with medical equipment.

For simplicity, we refer to this vehicle as an ambulance, as that is what it looks like, but technically, it is a 'nakil' vehicle, which in Turkish means 'transport', 'transfer' or 'conveyance'.

It differs from an ambulance in that the driver is not a fully qualified paramedic.  However, local medical staff in Kalkan are on hand in an emergency.


Further, the Belediye does intend to recruit a nurse over the coming months, and it is intended that her role would include being on call to ride with this vehicle.  When not on an emergency call, the nurse would be engaged on other Belediye duties.

The closest hospital to Kalkan is in Kaş, but depending on the type of emergency, patients may be taken to one of the larger hospitals in Fethiye. 

A new hospital is currently under construction in Gökseki, midway between Kalkan and Kaş, but it will not be fully operational until 2013.
