Kalkan beachKalkan Turkish Local News has been analysing the tourism statistics for Turkey, for the first 6 months of 2010.

In 2009, 2.4 million British nationals came to Turkey - 854,000 in the first half of the year, and 1,572,000 in the second half.

In 2010, for the first time ever, over 1 million British nationals visited Turkey in the first half of the year, an uplift of 18%.  This bodes well for the second half of 2010.

If we look at all visitors to Turkey in the first 6 months of the year (H1 2010), the numbers are up by 9%, to 11.6 million - that's almost 1 million up on the H1 2009 numbers.  The Russians are coming!  Their numbers increased by 25%, in the first half of 2010.

Kalkan beachInterestingly, according to the UK's Office for National Statistics, (ONS), in H1 2010, the number of British people travelling abroad was down by about 10%.

So fewer British people are going abroad in 2010, yet the numbers visiting Turkey are going up.  More British people are discovering how fantastic Turkey is, compared to more traditional holiday destinations.

The second half of 2010 in Turkey will be impacted by the collapse of holiday companies such as Goldtrail and Kiss Flights.

The degree of impact will depend upon how many people managed to rebook, and also how many people have been put off, fearing further tour operators going bust.

Meanwhile, the BBC reports that terrorism and strikes have had a major impact on tourism in Greece.  The Greek Ministry of Tourism is claiming that earnings from tourism are likely to drop by 10% in 2010.  However, the BBC suggests that this is over optimistic, and the figure is likely to be closer to 30%.

It's hard to make a direct comparison between Turkey and Greece, as Turkey's statistics are based on numbers of travellers, whereas the figures we have for Greece are based on earnings from tourism.  However, it is hard to escape the conclusion that Turkey is in a relatively stronger position right now.
