Şeker Bayram - 9th to 11th September 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Şeker BayramŞeker Bayram is a celebration, and national holiday, that marks the ending of Ramazan.

It is the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast, and begins with the Eid-ul-Fitr.

You can read more about Şeker Bayram on the very good 'All About Turkey' website: click here.

There are a few practical points to mention.  Firstly, all banks will close at lunchtime on Wednesday 8th September, and will not reopen until Monday 13th September.  ATMs have been known to run out towards the end of the holiday, however this year Deniz Bank and Akbank have additional standalone ATMs situated in Kalkan town, so maybe there will be enough cash to go round.

May we once again remind readers to be vigilant when using ATMs.  Crooks are operating in the Turkish coastal resorts, and a favourite time for these people to work is whilst the banks are closed.  If you see 'helpful strangers' loitering near ATMs, please take care.

We are informed that the post office (PTT) will be open as usual during the holiday period.

Please note that the Belediye office will be closed during Şeker Bayram.

If you are on the roads over Şeker Bayram, please be careful.  Statistics clearly show that road traffic accidents peak over the holiday period, which probably reflects the fact that many families are on the move, meeting up for family celebrations.

Finally, if you are in Kalkan feel free to join in the celebrations.  Please take a look at the KTLN Kalkan Guide to Şeker Bayram, which we published in September 2009.  (The dates for Şeker Bayram change every year, so ignore the 2009 dates in the article).

İyi Bayramlar!
