New Year's Day Swim - Kalkan Beach PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 23 December 2017

NYD Swim

The sad news is that there is no Loony Dook being organised in Kalkan this year.  But the good news is that a number of people still wish to go ahead and swim on New Year's Day and that is exactly what they will be doing at around 13.00.

The swimmers will plunge in at the same location as the Loony Dook, just off Kalkan town beach.  If you wish to go along for a swim or if you just want to watch the swimmers why not go along from 12 noon onwards.

And there is another reason to be there.  Some of the swimmers are keen to use this opportunity to have an informal gathering where friends can meet to remember Sally George, a British expat who sadly passed away recently.  As we move forward into a new year it's an opportunity to take a few moments to remember Sally and others who are no longer with us.

Kalkan expat resident Sally George dies aged 64 PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 19 December 2017

Sally GeorgeIt is with immense sadness that we report the death of Kalkan resident Sally George who passed away peacefully at St Catherine’s Hospice in Crawley in the early hours of Friday 15th December following a long period of illness.  She was 64 years old.

Sally leaves behind her wonderful mother Ann, her two loving sons Max and Mark, daughter in law Sarah, and grandchildren Jasper and Ryder whom she adored.

She first visited Kalkan with her mother many years ago, long before Kalkan was as popular as it is now.  It is a place that was destined to become her home both in a literal sense and also spiritually.

What's open Christmas and New Year 2017/18 PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 08 December 2017

NYE KalkanWe are sorry that due to personal reasons we were not around to publish our usual "What's Open" report for this winter.  However after a short break in service KTLN is now able to bring you news of what you can expect to find open in Kalkan over Christmas and New Year.

There are a small number of flights from the UK to Dalaman over the festive period, which is better than last year when we had none.  Local businesses are hoping and expecting that there will be more visitors around this year.

So here is a reminder of what is going to be open over the festive weeks ahead - looking mostly at places to eat and drink.  Please note that some places may already be close to being fully booked for Christmas Day and New Year's Eve - better to check before you go.

Coast restaurant to return on Süleyman Yılmaz Caddesi PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 07 December 2017

The new Coast restaurant

We bring you news of an interesting redevelopment in Kalkan old town.

The property in question is a derelict building on Süleyman Yılmaz Caddesi in front of Botanik Garden Bar and next to the Old Town Hotel & Cafe, which used to be an olive oil factory.

The building is still owned by the same family who are direct descendants of Süleyman Yılmaz, after whom the street was named.  The owners have agreed to rent the unit to Ömer Çalık who used to run Coast restaurant down at the harbour.  Ömer is planning to totally refurbish the old building in a sympathetic way that will showcase much of the original olive press machinery.

Friday, 01 December 2017

Christmas FairThe festive season gets a real boost soon with the return of two popular Christmas Fairs held in Fethiye.

First of all there is the FIG Christmas Fair on Wednesday 6th December, between 11.00 and 16.00.  This takes place at the Fethiye Kordon - next to Address restaurant.  Note that originally this was due to be held on 28th November but was postponed due to bad weather.

Then on Sunday 10th December there is the Çalış Christmas Fair organised by Çalış Children’s Charity (3Cs), which is scheduled to start at 11.00.

As well as an abundance of stalls selling traditional Christmas decorations, tree ornaments, garlands, candles, cards, cakes, preserves, chutneys, pickles and a myriad of other Christmas items, there will be lots of craft stalls selling beautiful hand-made gift items and paintings.
