Wish upon a shooting star - Pereid Meteor Shower 2017 PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 12 August 2017

Perseid Meteor ShowerIf you are in Kalkan over the next few days, you should be tilting your head back to take a good look at the night sky.

It's time for the annual spectacular that is the Perseid meteor shower.

The Perseids are so bright against the night sky, you don’t need binoculars or a telescope.  There may be as many as 100 meteors an hour flashing across the sky.  The weather forecast suggests a fairly clear sky tonight so you might see lots of them.  Look out for orbiting satellites too.

To find the optimal position in the night sky (the so called radiant point) look for the constellation of Perseus in the north east; the stars that make up Perseus form an upside down ‘Y’ shape.  That said meteors may be visible in all parts of the sky.

Turkey to UK flights - electronic device restrictions - update July 2017 PDF Print E-mail

Ban on electronic devices

Article updated 31st August 2017: The last article published by KTLN on this subject was in May 2017.  Click here to read the article

Today we report on a partial relaxation of the ban on certain electronic devices being taken in hand luggage for some flights from Turkey to the UK.

Unfortunately the change does not affect Dalaman or Antalya airports at the moment, so the additional hand luggage restrictions remain in place for the time being at the airports nearest to us in Kalkan.

However we take this movement as a positive sign and hopefully it is only a matter of time before other Turkish airports follow.

News for customers of Turkish banks who use cards to make online purchases PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 05 August 2017

Turkish cards onlineDo you have a debit card or credit card issued by your Turkish bank?  If so you may need to take action if you wish to use your cards to make online purchases.

In October 2016 the Turkish Banking Regulation and Supervision Authority brought in a requirement for banks in Turkey to obtain express permission from their customers saying that they wish to be able to use their debit or credit cards for online purchases.  This is intended to reduce the amount of online fraud.

With effect from 17th August 2017 any such cards belonging to customers who have not told their Turkish bank they wish to use them for online purchases will be disabled for online use.  These cards will still work in shops and in ATMs.

Water bills - is your direct debit up to date? PDF Print E-mail

Water - ASAT

In May KTLN advised Kalkan property owners that they needed to sign a new contract with the local water supply company, ASAT.  Click here to read the article.

There was a notional deadline to do this however ASAT has been understanding about foreign property owners who may not be in Kalkan to complete the paperwork, and we understand they are giving people more time to do this.

For those who have signed the new contract if you have been paying your water bill by direct debit from your bank account it is important to ensure that this is updated.  In fact you need to cancel your old direct debit and set up a new one with your new customer ID number (abone).

Bravo! Barmy bollards banished by Belediye PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 25 July 2017

BollardsIn an outbreak of common sense those obvious trip hazards lined up along the pavements at the top of the old town have been unceremoniously removed.

These small grey granite blocks were installed by the Belediye in May 2014 to prevent vehicles from parking on the pavements.

They have been responsible for countless accidents.  We know of several people who have been hospitalised after tripping over these low-level lumps.
