Power to the people - electricity generating solar panels installed in Sarıbelen PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 29 October 2017

Solar panels in SarıbelenUp in the mountains behind Kalkan solar power technology is coming to the sleepy village of Sarıbelen.

Rows of solar panels are being installed on the mountain side to harvest the sun's rays and generate electricity that will be trickled into the grid.

The installation team told us that this is being replicated in other nearby locations, so expect to see more of this environmentally friendly power production popping up in our region.

If you think about it sunshine is something we have rather a lot of so it makes perfect sense to use it, especially as this type of energy reduces our reliance on fossil fuel and nuclear sources.  Every little helps!

Republic Day (Cumhuriyet Bayram) in Kalkan - 29th October 2017 PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 27 October 2017

Republic Day - Cumhuriyet BayramSunday 29th October is Republic Day, (Cumhuriyet Bayram), which this year celebrates the 94th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey by Atatürk.

In the morning, some time around 09.00, the school band will march into town to the Kaya/Kipa supermarket roundabout and back to school.  The celebrations will continue at the school amphitheatre where the children will perform a special show.

As was the case last year there will be a torchlight procession in Kalkan, this year starting at 19.00 from the bus station, walking down to the harbour.  Everyone is welcome to join in.  They will also be holding a similar walk in Kaş at the same time.

Kaş Road diversion in place through Gökseki PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 25 October 2017

Kaş Road diversionA section of Kaş Road (D400) near to Kaş has been closed for several days now while work is done on resurfacing the road. It is cutting off the normal access to Kaş State Hospital (Devlet Hastanesi).

The temporary closure has seen traffic diverted through the nearby village of Gökseki, as shown on the map below.  The D400 road between Kalkan and Kaş is extrememly busy and there have been bottlenecks in Gökseki as large lorries have manoeuvred slowly through the narrow streets in the centre of the village.

We have tried to discover how long this diversion is in place.  Nobody can give us a definite answer however unofficially we have heard three to four months mentioned by people who work in the health service in Kaş, so until further notice it may be prudent to allow extra time for journeys between Kalkan and Kaş.

Quiz nights return to Blue Turtle - Tuesday 7th November PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 24 October 2017

Quiz nightYou know it's nearing the end of the tourist season when this ever popular expat evening entertainment kicks in.

Quiz nights return to the Blue Turtle Cafe Bar on Tuesday 7th November, starting at 20.00.

The quiz takes place most Tuesdays out of season, but may take the occasional break - check before you go.

It would be true to say that some people take the quiz more seriously than others, (look for the furrowed brows), but at the end of the day, it is a fun event, and there is always a good atmosphere.

Daylight Saving Time in Turkey - do not adjust your clocks PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 18 October 2017

Daylight Saving Time - clocks go back
In 2016 the Turkish government announced that it was pulling out of the biannual Daylight Saving Time (DST) protocol whereby countries advance their clocks by an hour in spring and fall back by an hour at the end of summer.

So last year in October Turkey did not turn the clocks back by an hour.  It's the same again this year.  On Sunday 29th October 2017 when many countries, including the UK, will put their clocks back by an hour Turkey will not do so.

This means that from Sunday 29th October 2017 to Sunday 25th March 2018 Turkey will be 3 hours ahead of UK time.  Then from Sunday 25th March 2018 we will revert to the usual difference of just 2 hours until the end of summer.
