Coming soon to a beach club near you: Outdoor film nights PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 20 August 2017

Indigo Beach ClubA long time ago in a galaxy far far away someone invented the cinema - it may have been Pearl and Dean, we're not sure.

Anyway it's taken a while to reach us here in Kalkan but we are about to discover the joy of moving images with a new pop-up "silver screen" in an amazing location down at Indigo Beach Club.

If you're fanatical about film and fanatical about Kalkan it's a perfect combination.

Coming soon to a beach club near you, will be a number of feature length films.  Below we explain how it all works and tell you about the first film which will be screened next week.

Kalkan Jandarma and crime report PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 19 August 2017

Kalkan JandarmaIt’s been a while since we wrote about crime in Kalkan and the work of the Jandarma.  Our last articles were in May and June.

We have just had a meeting with our new Jandarma chief in Kalkan and his commanding officer from Kaş and in this report we write about what has been keeping them all busy.

Some people think of Kalkan as a bubble - a perfect paradise where everything is sweetness and light.  The truth is that we live in the real world and whilst most of the time we are fortunate to have a carefree life, sometimes bad things happen.  We need local law enforcement here as much as you need it wherever you live.

Welcome to our new chief
Every four years or so we get a new Jandarma chief.  The previous one left in June and we have had a temporary person in charge over recent weeks.  Our new commander Ali Örnek took up his post this week.  He and his wife and two children have moved to Kalkan from his previous post in Mardin, in the east of Turkey.

Yesterday we met with our new chief to wish him well in his new role and to discuss a number of issues of interest to people in Kalkan.

Public holidays - Victory Day and Kurban Bayram 2017 PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 17 August 2017

Kurban BayramComing up soon are a couple of Turkish national holidays.  In view of the fact that tourism in Turkey has not been doing so well the government has decided to effectively combine Zafer Bayram (Victory Day) celebrations with an extended Kurban Bayram, also known as Eid al Adha (the Feast of Sacrifice).

This is the third consecutive year that the Turkish government has extended public holidays in an attempt to boost the tourism economy.  It is reported that the benefit may be worth over one billion Turkish lira.

The government has decreed that Eid al Adha will begin on Monday 28th August and end on Monday 4th September, with people returning to work on 5th September.  If you include weekends this takes the break to 10 days.  This is for the public sector only (various government departments) but does not apply to the private sector, e.g. banks.  See details below.

Tourism in Kalkan: The year so far - August 2017 PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 16 August 2017

Kalkan beach 2017Time to reflect on the tourism season so far.  How is tourism in Kalkan going and what can we expect for the rest of the year?

Apart from our own observations from walking around town we have spoken with a number of business people and those who work in tourism, property owners who rent out villas and apartments, plus a few local bank managers to get their overview.

This year feels quite different for a number of reasons.  Kalkan started this tourism year against the backdrop of a disappointing 2016 and a very quiet winter.  Back in April/May there was a mixture of apprehension and also a determination to carry on because frankly what else is there to do.

Despite these challenging conditions for tourism we saw businesses pick themselves up, dust themselves down and get ready to provide the warm welcome visitors expect.  And as usual we saw that hope springs eternal with a number of new businesses opening in Kalkan.

Report on the Lycian Food Festival 2017 PDF Print E-mail

Lycian Food Festival in Kalkan

The Lycian Food Festival made a comeback this year after a break in 2016.  It took place on 8th July so we are a bit late in bringing you photos (we were in England on holiday) but better late than never, here are a few photos we managed to obtain from the big day.

The main event was preceded by a walk through the old town to the harbour.  There was a good crowd down there to sample the food and drink on offer from a number of stalls, but some commented on how exceptionally hot it was and this meant that people tended not to stick around for too long as they went looking for shade in nearby establishments.

The crowd was entertained by local dancers and musicians in the daytime, plus in the evening there was an impressive harbour-side concert.

The serious business of the day (if you can call it that) was the competition between a number of Kalkan chefs aiming to impress the judges with their culinary skills.
