Turkish language lessons in Kalkan and Kaş PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 15 October 2017

Learning TurkishImproving your Turkish is not a bad idea.  A while ago someone told us a story of how an English lady suffered a language malfunction when using her limited Turkish whilst travelling on a local Kalkan minibus (dolmuş).

A friend had drummed into her the Turkish for "I want to get off the bus" which she was silently repeating to herself on the journey.  As the dolmuş approached her destination she leaned forward and confidently told the driver, in her best Turkish that she wanted to buy the bus.  The driver was somewhat confused and her fellow passengers (Turkish) found it highly amusing.

And we will draw a discrete veil over the case of the woman who for several months thought she was asking the butcher for chicken breasts - the butcher was too embarassed to explain exactly what she was saying, but it wasn't the kind of language you would use in polite company, unless perhaps at an ornithologist convention.

So in order to avoid inadvertently buying a bus, or other similar embarassing situations we would highly recommend local classes to improve your Turkish.  Classes are starting soon in both Kalkan and Kaş.  If you are interested please read on.

Crop burning creates huge pall of smoke visible from Kalkan PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 14 October 2017

Crop burning

A field between Yeşilköy and Çayköy is currently on fire and sending a huge pall of smoke into the air that is clearly visible from Kalkan.

The seat of the fire is fairly small and presumably under control as no fire tenders appear to be in attendance, however the plume of smoke is enormous and visible for miles around.  We assume that this is deliberate crop burning rather than an accidental fire, but we have no way of knowing for certain.

In the nearby villages of Çayköy and Üzümlü there is a smell of smoke in the air and fine pieces of black ash can be seen drifting down from the sky.  The prevailing wind is taking the smoke away from Yeşilköy and Kalkan.  Update: The wind appears to have changed direction as the smell of smoke has descended on Kalkan and ash debris can be seen on the ground.

Below we provide a few images of the fire and the smoke.

Turkey - Greece commercial boats ban relaxed PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 12 October 2017

Meis ExpressOn 26th September we told you that following a dispute between Turkey and Greece, the Turkish Ministry of Transport had introduced a ban on all commercial yachts and passenger ships sailing to Greece.

For yachts the ban took immediate effect and for passenger ships the last date for travel was set for today, 12th October.  We are pleased to report that following dicussions between the two countries the ban on ferry boats has been relaxed.

The ban remains in force on commercial yachts less than 24 metres.  They are continuing with talks to resolve any remaining issues for these smaller boats.

This is good news as it means that the ferry services between Fethiye and Rhodes and the service from Kaş to Meis (Kastellorizo) will now continue to operate normally.

You can read more about this dispute by clicking on the following link: Hurriyet Daily News

CAA launches unprecedented repatriation effort after Monarch collapse PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 02 October 2017

MonarchBad news from the travel industry.  After a long period of speculation it has been announced that the UK's fifth largest airline group Monarch has ceased trading and entered administration.

The Monarch web site is no longer available and confirmation of the failure of the business has been published on the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) web site.  As of today 2 October 2017 all future holidays and flights provided by Monarch have been cancelled and are no longer operating.

The scale of this failure is unprecedented and because there are as many as 110,000 passengers abroad, the UK government has asked the CAA to co-ordinate flights back to the UK for all Monarch customers currently overseas. These new flights will be at no extra cost to Monarch customers.
