Belediye workmen prepare Kalkan beach PDF Print E-mail

Kalkan beach

Belediye workmen are really digging Kalkan beach.

To be fair the shovels are supplemented by two fairly hefty diggers as they flatten out the beach before putting out the sun shades and sun beds.

It also looks like we have got a couple of new changing huts plus the plumbing for three showers right on the beach.

This may seem a bit late in the day to be doing this, as the tourist season has already started but last year the sun beds didn't go out until 1st June.

Just about everywhere is open now throughout the town.  We have updated our What's New report to show the latest situation.  Just a few late things to mention in the vicinity of the beach, up on Atatürk Caddesi, Kaptan's restaurant is set to reopen after quite a long break.  Neighbouring Sunset restaurant will be open shortly too.

Culture House art exhibition opens Monday 22nd May - Sara Allan PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 17 May 2017

Sara Allan artistThe Kalkan Culture House is embarking upon a new season of exhibitions, starting on Monday 22nd May with Köyceğiz based artist Sara Allan.

Sara was born in Hayling Island in 1951.  She spent much of her childhood delighting in nature.  Her need to paint, to find herself through painting, resulted from the years she spent as a shepherd in the mountains of Scotland and on the chalk downlands of Salisbury Plain.

Before finding her own vision, her apprenticeship was spent as a still-life artist, a genre exercising her need for discipline and method.  Sara has exhibited regularly in London for many years.

"From a tangle of lines, executed at great speed, offering no hint of the finished form, she then applies brilliant and surprising colour, using the lines as a form of scaffolding. She used pure colour. She favours large canvasses. What is truly surprising is the certainty, the feeling, as in nature, that each picture is inevitable, true, complete in itself. Her art flows out of her, vibrant, quivering with energy."  George Melly, 2002.

Kalkan fan Chris Samuels dies aged 73 PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 15 May 2017

Chris SamuelsIt is with great sadness that we report the death of a regular visitor to Kalkan, Chris Samuels.

Chris had recently been suffering from cancer and the illness claimed his life yesterday, Sunday 14th May.  He was 73 years old.

Chris was a familiar face in Kalkan since his first visit around a decade ago.  Like many of us he fell under Kalkan's magical spell, bought his very own villa and became a regular visitor.  Chris made many friends in Kalkan over the last ten years and he will be missed.

Chris was originally from Sutton but more recently lived in Dorking.

We send our condolences to his partner Marilyn, his family and friends.

Traffic restrictions in Kalkan old town

Here are a few more indications that the tourist season is underway.

The Belediye has today put in place the barriers that restrict traffic in the old town.  From today and for the rest of the season vehicles and scooters will only be allowed in the old town between the hours of 08.00 and 12.00.  This will enable businesses to take delivery of stock and supplies in the morning.

For the rest of the day traffic is prohibited, except for Police, Jandarma, the ambulance and fire services, and the forestry department.  Rubbish lorries will have unrestricted access too.

Businesses are required to keep the streets clear (free from signs and furniture), for these service vehicles.

Watch out - burglars about PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 11 May 2017

We thought it appropriate to mention that there have been a few burglaries in Kalkan over recent nights.  You may wish to be extra vigilant around your property and take extra care when locking up at night.

Last season we believe that burglaries were actually fewer in number - we base this on anecdotal evidence from property owners and also from conversations we have had with the Jandarma.  But of course it's a problem that never entirely goes away and we all need to remain alert.

We understand that properties in the Kızıltaş area of town have been targeted over recent days, but they could just as easily target other locations across town.

These burglaries have taken place in the early hours of the morning, and windows/doors have been used as a point of entry.
