Reminder - Kaş Belediye property tax due in May PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 10 May 2017
Kalkan office of the BelediyeJust a reminder that if you own a property in Kalkan you must pay at least the first installment of your local Belediye property tax before the end of May.

For most of us it's not a huge amount and if you want to pay in full you can do so.

Failure to pay at least your first installment will result in a fine.

You can still pay this tax at the old Belediye office in Kalkan, on Karayolları Sokak (where the Thursday market is).

Price increase at Göcek tunnel PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 May 2017

Göcek TunnelNews for people who travel between Dalaman and Kalkan - the toll for cars to go through the tunnel at Göcek has been increased from 4.50TL to 5.00TL.  The cost for a minibus has increased from 6.00TL to 7.00TL.

This is for the old tunnel that was opened back in 2006.  Work on the much awaited new tunnel began in 2013 and was due to be completed in 2015.  It's not finished yet.

When it is ready the new tunnel will be free to use.  The old one will be used for traffic in one dierction and the new tunnel for the other direction.  Motorists will only pay to use the old tunnel.

Kalkan taxi prices to rise by 12.5% PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 May 2017

Kalkan taxiHere is some news that will be of interest if you use Kalkan taxis.  With effect from this month the cost of a taxi journey will go up by 12.5%.

It may sound like quite a hike but do bear in mind that this comes twelve months after taxi fares were slashed by over 20% and we are still below pre 2016 levels of pricing.

The justification given for this price increase, apart from CPI, is that over the last year petrol prices in Turkey have increased significantly and vehicle insurance has become more expensive.  The current rate of inflation (CPI) in Turkey is around 12%.

Later in this report we set out the old and new fares with some examples of what a journey will now cost.

History of the Turks - a series of presentations by Kazım Oğuz PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 08 May 2017

Kazım Oğuz - Turkish Cooking CourseArticle updated and republished 8th May: A series of five talks, one every two weeks, on the History of the Turkish People will be given by popular Kalkan chef Kazım Oğuz starting at 18.00 on Wednesday 22nd February, at the Blue Turtle Cafe Bar in Kalkan.

Update:  A few people were unable to make Kazım's last Turkish History Talk - "The End of the Ottoman Empire, First World War and the Creation of the Republic of Turkey” so he is doing it again.  It will be on Wednesday 10th May at Blue Turtle Cafe & Bar starting at 18.30.

It’s not the first time these talks have been given - Kazım did a similar thing a couple of years ago and the talks were well received.  It's an opportunity to discover more about the history of this amazing country that we live in.

Even if you came to the previous event these talks are bound to be different as they will be influenced by the group involved each time.  Questions and answers are welcomed and are very much part of the event.

KTLN start of the season party - Monday 22nd May PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 06 May 2017

Jimmy's (Yakamoz)We organised a few KTLN get togethers last year -  one at the end of May (Seaport restaurant), another mid September (Kleo Bar) and a third at Yakamoz in October.  All were well attended, and as far as we recall a good time was had by all.

A few people have suggested we have a few more get togethers this year, so let's begin with a start of the season party later this month.

We are inviting anyone and everyone who would like to come along to Yakamoz Bar starting at 17.30 on Monday 22nd May.  Yakamoz is also known by some as Jimmy's Bar - it's by the harbour and not far from the beach.  It's the place with the fancy chairs!

It’s nothing formal - just a chance to meet up with fellow KTLN readers and Kalkan lovers over a drink or two down by the beach.

We are starting at 17.30 as it will still be light then but not too hot, and for those who plan to eat out it gives them time for a pre-dinner drink before heading off to their favourite restaurant.

Turkey to UK flights - electronic device restrictions - an update PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 02 May 2017

Cameras with lithium batteries

Updated 4th May 2017:  Following KTLN reader feedback and email exchanges with the British Consulate in Turkey we have updated this article.

On 21st March KTLN reported that the UK government had banned certain electronic devices from cabin baggage on incoming flights from a limited number of countries, including Turkey.  The ban is ongoing, until further notice.

In this follow up report we go over the key points and also update you on how this is being implemented at Dalaman airport.  We assume procedures at Antalya airport and indeed all other international airports in Turkey are the same.  (Unless you know different, in which case please let us know: Contact KTLN).

The UK Department for Transport web site announced the ban which will prevent travellers taking laptop computers and some tablet computers in the cabin; instead they will have to be placed in hold luggage.  Smaller devices such as iPhones and other similar mobiles will be permitted.
