Ding dong! Church bell relocated to centre of Kalkan old town PDF Print E-mail

Church bell

Kalkan regulars may know that the mosque in the centre of the old town used to be a Greek Orthodox church.

The bell that used to ring out from the church was removed when the building was converted to a mosque in 1934.  It used to languish in a Belediye storage room until it saw the light of day again and was placed outside the conference room at the Belediye building in Kalkan.

Now it has been decided to get it out into the open where more people can see it.  It’s new location is just down from Merkez Cafe on Hasan Altan Caddesi - the main street running downhill through the old town.

Another exclusive offer for KTLN members - Dami Damacana Water Covers PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 02 June 2017

Dami DamacanaHere is another exclusive offer for KTLN members.

It’s a bit of a niche product but we like them and we hope you do too.  They are funky and new - we have not seen covers quite like these before, plus they are useful.

We have negotiated a 10% discount on the purchase of these rather splendid and useful damacan covers (damacana kılıfı).  A damacan is a 19 litre bottle of water.

The “Dami” is a coverage system specially designed for 19 litre plastic/glass water bottles that we all use here in Kalkan at home and in offices.

The main aim of the design is to keep the water healthy by blocking out sunlight and to bring a joyful touch of design and colour.  Bottled water should always be stored away from direct sunlight - and we have more than our fair share of sunlight here in Kalkan.

Please drive carefully and watch your speed PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 01 June 2017

Speed radar checksKalkan is a small town with a lot of traffic.  Some days you could be forgiven for thinking that Kalkan has obtained some kind of dispensation to suspend the normal rules of the road, but surprisingly this is not the case.

People on scooters should wear helmets.  People in cars should wear seatbelts.  Texting or talking on your mobile whilst in a car or on a scooter is illegal.  So is drink driving.

And there are speed limits too.  On the main D400 road to Fethiye and Kaş it is mostly 90 kph but there are some dual carriageway sections where you can go faster.  (Bear in mind that for people carrier type vehicles you need to deduct 10 kph from the speed limit).

In Kalkan town and in fact in all towns or built up areas, the speed limt is just 50 kph - that's around 30 mph, although close to schools you may see signs for a lower speed limit.  Interestingly there is a new sign in town advising of speed radar checks.  See the image below.  We spoke to the Traffic Jandarma and they confirmed that these radar checks will take place randomly, from time to time in Kalkan town.

KTLN guides to residence permits updated PDF Print E-mail

DGMM Helpline

The Foreigners & International Protection Act - Law No. 6458 came into effect on 10th April 2014.  This law governs the way in which foreigners can obtain residence permits.  It also covers eVisas for tourists.  This link takes you to the English translation of Law No 6458

Over the years KTLN has attempted to keep our guides to Short Term Residence Permits (STRP) and Long Term Residence Permits (LTRP) up to date.  We have done this with help from KTLN readers who have been kind enough to provide feedback on their own experiences.

We have just updated the STRP Guide and the LTRP Guide and in this article we mention some of the most significant changes that we have included.

We have also updated the cost details to reflect current charges.

Ramazan in Kalkan 2017 PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 24 May 2017

Kalkan MosqueRamazan - a month long period of fasting in the Islamic calendar, occurs in Turkey this year between Saturday 27th May and Saturday 24th June.

During Ramazan, devout followers of Islam will not eat or drink between sunrise and sunset.

Over recent years it has been especially hard, as Ramazan has fallen in the hot summer months.  This year it falls at a time when temperatures are still warm, but not quite as hot as recent years.

The reason Ramazan shifts forward each year is because it is linked to the lunar calendar and not our Gregorian calendar.

All ASAT customers required to sign a new contract for the supply of water PDF Print E-mail

Water - ASAT

Important update 24th May 2017: see below.  If you own a property in the district of Kaş (which of course includes Kalkan) you should be aware that the local water company is trying to reach all of its customers with a request for them to call in to their local ASAT office to sign a document.  If you are a property owner we recommend that you read this report.

You may recall that the provision of water used to be the responsibility of the Belediye, but that all changed in April 2014 when this service was taken over by a company called ASAT.  The handover was not particularly smooth and no bills were issued for several months although everyone caught up with their payments eventually.

ASAT is a completely separate legal entity and those of us who were originally billed by the Belediye have never been asked to sign a new contract with ASAT, which is irregular to say the least.  Hence the company now wishes to put that right.

Promoting Kalkan: Ilios Travel brings UK travel agents to Kalkan PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 18 May 2017

Ilios Travel - trip to Kalkan May 2017In these challenging times for tourism we report on a great initiative by tour operator Ilios Travel to bring UK travel agents over here to experience Kalkan for themselves.

Ilios Travel is part of the Visions Holidays Group and in partnership with Turkish Airlines, earlier this month they flew out nine travel agents from across England and Wales.  Their host in Kalkan was Rıdvan Zeybek, owner of Kalkan Experience Property and local agent for Ilios Travel.

The aim of the trip was to convince the agents that they can be confident in promoting Kalkan as a first class holiday resort and to be able to reassure their clients from their own first hand experience that Kalkan is genuinely a safe and welcoming holiday destination.
