How fab to check out the web cams - one night I just feasted on the moonlit sea over Kalamar Bay where we have our villa, and just dreamt of being there.  Kalkan is therapy for the soul!

Kalkan wedding - Gary Whittaker and Lindsay Driver PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 11 July 2017

Kalkan wedding 6th June 2017Kalkan is a great place to get married.  But don't just take our word for it.

In this report we hand over to Lew Whittaker, father of the groom to tell us in his own words how it went.

We have known Lew for many years now and he is a true Kalkan fan.  Through this family event he has introduced many first timers to Kalkan.  We suspect that for many of them their first visit won't be their last.

Transfer With Me web site retired PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 05 July 2017

TransferWithMe.comBack in June we told you that our sister web site Transfer With Me was temporarily unavailable due to a technical issue.

It was not a malicious hacking scenario but rather a technical issue that arose during some routine housekeeping being done by the company that hosts the site.

We have evaluated the problem and reluctantly concluded that we are going to retire the web site.

Lycian Food Festival in Kalkan - Saturday 8th July 2017 PDF Print E-mail

2nd Lycian Food Festival in Kalkan

Reminder and update 5th July: KTLN is happy to announce that the Lycian Food Festival is back.  It will take place on Saturday 8th July 2017 in the harbour area of Kalkan.

For a number of reasons the festival didn't take place in 2016 but we suspect that many people will welcome its return.  The last time the festival was held was on 3rd June 2015 and it was a huge success.  You can read our report here.

During the day there will be many stalls where you will be able to sample some of Kalkan's finest cuisine, including lots of traditional Turkish food.  There will also be entertainment from local dancers and musicians.  Plus in the evening it is planned to hold a concert down at the harbour.

The serious business of the day (if you can call it that) will be a competition between a number of Kalkan chefs who will be trying to impress the judges with their culinary skills.  Fancy being a judge?

Belediye introduces parking charges at Kalkan harbour PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 20 June 2017

Harbour car park barriers

Workmen were busy installing car park barriers down at the harbour today.

This work heralds the introduction of new parking charges which will apply 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  It's not known whether the barriers will remain in place out of season.

As far as we know there are no further plans to charge for parking in Kalkan although we suspect that many people would welcome improved management of parking around town.  If we hear any more we will of course provide an update.

In the absence of any further parking charges being introduced we wonder whether these solitary charges down at the harbour will push some parking back on to the already congested streets.

Şeker Bayram in Kalkan 2017 PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 19 June 2017

Kalkan MosqueRamazan - a period of fasting from the Islamic calendar ends soon.

Ramazan is followed by a 3 day national holiday called Ramazan Bayram or Şeker Bayram, which this year is from Sunday 25th to Tuesday 27th June.  You will normally see people starting to prepare for Şeker Bayram the day before - this year that's Saturday 24th June.

The first day of Şeker Bayram is known as Eid al-Fitr, (the breaking of the fast), when Muslims will gather to offer a prayer of thanks.  You can also expect to see people celebrating at this time.

As "şeker" means "sugar", this particular holiday is marked by a feast of sweet things - it's especially nice for the children (and adults with a sweet tooth).  If you go into the shops and supermarkets you will notice lots of extra sweets and chocolates.

Public meeting in Kaş concerning the environment - Monday 19th June PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 18 June 2017

Planning map

There is to be a public meeting in the Republic Square in Kaş on Monday 19th June starting at around 12.00, where a group of people will outline their concerns about a number of development plans being proposed by the local authorities.

The Kaş Protection Platform (Kaş Koruma Platformu) is involved in legal action with the Belediye concerning their plans to develop the area.  The group says this is an important subject for the future of Kaş - particularly with regard to conserving and protecting the environment.

The organisers are inviting anyone who cares about the future of the Kaş district and those who care about the environment to go along.

The Kaş Protection Platform is a group of mainly local people who have joined forces to speak up for the protection of the environment.  They are concerned about the over-development of Kaş and the threats posed to areas of special interest where the push for commercialisation may over-ride the need for conservation.
