Patara beach litter pick walk a great success PDF Print E-mail

Patara litter pick walk

On Tuesday 25th April members of the Kalkan Walking Group and some of the customers of Marley's Cafe and Bar joined forces, rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into a spot of litter picking.  In total there were 25 volunteers who managed to collect a significant number of bags of rubbish, leaving Patara that little bit cleaner.

Waste was split into two - glass, plastic and cans went into black bags for recycling, and the rest went in blue bags as general rubbish.

It was a pleasantly warm day as the litter-pickers strolled down the beach against the backdrop of the glorious Patara dunes and the turquoise Mediterranean Sea.

Winch waits for the right man - boats remain high and dry PDF Print E-mail

Kalkan harbour

Kalkan’s boatmen gathered at the harbour today as the much awaited winch came to town.

Sadly not much happened though as the main man - the hoist master himself didn’t arrive until quite late this evening.

It was too big a responsibility for the winch driver to undertake on his own.  It’s a delicate and skilled operation and requires an expert.

So everyone is waiting for tomorrow morning when the winching is now due to begin and hopefully all the boats will be safely returned to the water.

Below we show a few images from the harbour today.

National Soveriegnty & Children's Day 2017

We recently told you how the Kalkan Culture House in the heart of the old town is to be reinvigorated this year under new management.

Well they kicked off the season in style on Sunday 23rd April with a fantastic celebration of National Sovereignty & Children's Day.  This all took place in and around the Culture House on Atatürk Caddesi on a glorious spring day.

The itinerary included music and dancing by local children, songs from the Kalkan Culture House Singers, children's pebble painting organised by Kalkan Art Group, plus face painting (always popular), story telling and book signing by children's author Jeremy Strong and a game straight from an English village fete - "Splat the Rat".

The turnout was excellent with perhaps a couple of hundred people there in the spring sunshine.  It was great to see the community coming out in such numbers to celebrate this Turkish national holiday.

Mehmet Sertel of Gusto restaurant dies in tragic motorbike accident PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 25 April 2017

Mehmet SertelMany people in Kalkan are coming to terms with the shocking news that a local young man, Mehmet Sertel lost his life in a tragic motorbike accident early this morning.

The incident is believed to have occured at about 05.20 this morning close to Yalı supermarket on Şehitler Caddesi.  The Jandarma are investigating what happened but we understand that there were no witnesses to the accident.

CCTV images from local business premises appear to show that no other vehicles were involved, and it seems that Mehmet lost control of his motorbike and collided with the pavement.  Unfortunately Mehmet was not wearing a crash helmet and he suffered fatal injuries.

Mehmet was a very popular young man and will be known to many as the manager at Gusto restaurant.  This is an unbelievably tragic accident and a terrible waste of a young life.

There is nothing like a Dane - Danish Ambassador to Turkey visits Kalkan PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 24 April 2017

Svend Olling - Danish Ambassador to TurkeyWe get some very interesting people visiting Kalkan.  Actors, musicians, sports people, "celebs" (people of no discernable talent who are simply famous for being "on telly"), politicians and the occasional diplomat.  When we spot them we tend to leave them in peace rather than pester them as they are on holiday after all.

Now that he has left it's OK to let you know that we had a great Dane in town last week when the Danish Ambassador to Turkey, Svend Olling visited Kalkan.

The Ambassador was with a small party visiting this part of the Turquoise Coast, and according to local businessman Ridvan Zeybek who was advising how to make the most of his time here, the Ambassador had a most enjoyable stay.

It's not the first senior diplomat we have had in Kalkan - there have been a few.  In fact our very own British Ambassador, Richard Moore has spent a few days in Kalkan with his wife Maggie and her guide dog Star.
