Meeting on marine pollution in Kaş
Friday, 23. July 2010, 16:00 - 18:00
Share

In April 2010, Kalkan Turkish Local News reported a meeting that was held in Kaş between local officials and foreigners living in the area - including people from Kalkan.

KTLN readers may recall that sea pollution was a topic which was raised.

The man who spoke so elequently, and with authority at that meeting was Paolo Guglielmi, an Italian marine biologist who has a place in Kaş. Paolo now wants to invite people to a follow up meeting.

What follows is an email from Paolo, which is self-explanatory.

I am sorry to come back to you a bit later than planned but I had some issue to resolve in Rome and could not come to Turkey earlier.

I am now in Kas and will stay until the end of September.

And the fist step that I promised you, is going to happen next Friday the 23rd of July from 16:00 PM to 18:00 PM in the Kas Belediye meeting room (the same as the last April foreigners meeting).

Thanks to the availability of the Belediye and of other friends who helped me, I was able to reserve that meeting room for us.

The aim is first of all to know each other a bit better and then share ideas on the following initial points:

Short term-Urgent Issues

1) Actions to reverse the increasing sea pollution trend from Hotels and Boats along the coast in Kas and Kalkan;

2) Actions to clean up and dispose the discarded construction materials (some of which containing toxic substances) disseminated around each old/new villa or building and along the roads in Kas and Kalkan;

3) Actions to clean up and dispose the discarded construction materials (mostly iron ladders and beach structures) dumped at sea along the Kas coast (maybe also in Kalkan?);

4) Actions for the construction of a walking/cycling lane where possible in Kas and Kalkan;

5) Actions for delimiting, where possible, swimming areas with small buoys along the coast in Kas and Kalkan (before having pictures on the newspapers of some seriously injured swimmer by speedboats).

Medium term issues

1) Process to get eventually organized as an NGO (Non Governmental Organization) open to everybody with the mission of making pressure and supporting local authorities to achieve development and modernization in full harmony and balance with the local people and natural resources;

2) Actions to address with more efficacy the problem of solid waste production, use, disposal and recycling;

3) Actions to start promoting with concrete examples, like small pilot projects, the use of renewable sources of energy like photovoltaic solar panels and wind turbines.

Tamam, I know it is a lot of meat on the grill but I think it will be crucial and absolutely worth to start sharing ideas on these points with the view of transforming them into real actions.

Of course, if you have other points/issues to complete the agenda (always in this domain of nature conservation / sustainable development) they will be more than welcome to be discussed.

I am counting on the participation of all who are in these days in Kas and Kalkan area and are at least concerned about the value of their investments if not of nature conservation.

I will take care of writing a short meeting report to inform all those who will not be able to come.

Looking forward not to have enough seats in the meeting room ;-) and to see you there again!

Ciao

Paolo Guglielmi
